She understood that mission flourishes not because people are identical, but because they are united by love and a common purpose. This is God’s mission, entrusted to all of us. Neither possesses everything. Neither is complete without the other. This is interdependence—not dependence, not independence, but interdependence—the humble recognition that God’s mission needs the gifts of all.

The Heart of Partnership: The Spirituality of St. John Eudes

Both Sisters and Partners-in-Mission are persons being formed by the same Heart. Therefore, partnership begins not with organizational structures but with conversion of heart.

St. John Eudes calls us to let the compassionate Heart of the Good Shepherd shape our relationships. The heart that has encountered the Good Shepherd becomes capable of humility, mercy, patience, forgiveness, generosity, and self-giving. This means that the spirituality of partnership must first ask: “What kind of heart do we bring to one another?” Do we bring a heart that controls, or a heart that serves?

Mercy Among Those Who Carry the Mission

The spirituality of St. Mary Euphrasia is rooted deeply in mercy. But mercy is not only directed toward those whom we serve; mercy must also shape the relationships among those who serve. Mercy means seeing one another through the eyes of God. Mercy means correcting without humiliating. Mercy means accompanying rather than condemning. Mercy means allowing another person the possibility of growth. Mercy means remembering that every person carries a story that we may not fully know. Mercy means being patient with one another’s weaknesses while also calling one another toward greater responsibility.

Perhaps the question for our Regional Chapter is therefore not only: “What structures will help our mission?” but also: “How can we make our relationships credible for the mission?” Because the world will not believe in our message of reconciliation if we cannot practice reconciliation among ourselves.

Partnership as a Synodal Way of Being

Synodality is not primarily a set of procedures; it is an attitude—an openness, a willingness to listen, to understand, to discern, and to take responsibility together. Communion must be built through prayer, concrete relationships, trust, and daily conversion. This has profound implications for our understanding of partnership. Synodality means walking together, listening together, discerning together, learning from one another, and taking responsibility together for mission. For us as a congregation, this raises an important question: “Do our structures truly allow Partners-in-Mission to fully engage in the mission, or do they simply allow them to assist in carrying it out?”

There is a significant difference between assistance and partnership:

Assistance says: Help us accomplish what we have already decided

Partnership says: Let us discern together what the Spirit is asking of us

Assistance gives task.Partnership shares responsibility

Assistance asks for cooperation. Partnership seeks communion

From Ownership to Stewardship

Partnership as spirituality may require a profound conversion from ownership to stewardship, from directing to accompanying, from controlling to entrusting, from doing for others to doing with others, and from seeing lay people as helpers to recognizing them as partners in the charism. This does not mean abandoning leadership or responsibility; rather, it means understanding authority in the Gospel way—as service to communion and mission.

Walking with the One Shepherd

The image that perhaps best captures our hope is the image of the Good Shepherd walking among the flock. The Shepherd does not journey alone. The mission of seeking, welcoming, healing, reconciling, and restoring God’s people has always been a shared mission. When partnership becomes spirituality: collaboration becomes communion; work becomes ministry; employment becomes vocation; authority becomes service; formation becomes accompaniment; difference becomes gift; and mission becomes a shared response to God’s love.

This is the interdependence to which the Spirit may be calling us. Not sisters with lay people as two separate groups, nor sisters and lay people working alongside each other, but sisters and Partners-in-Mission journeying together as one missionary body.

Reflection Questions:

As we listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and to the call of the Church to synodality, what personal or structural conversion is God asking of us so that Sisters and Partners-in-Mission may become one missionary body, sharing responsibility for the charism and mission in our region?

Looking at our daily interactions: Do we bring a heart that controls, or a heart that serves? How can we heal any wounds or silent hurts that exist in our current collaborative relationships?

In our ministries and workplaces: Are we actively transitioning from simply ‘assisting’ (giving tasks) to true ‘partnership’ (sharing responsibility and discerning together)?

Grace: To embrace partnership as a spirituality of communion, interdependence, and shared mission.
